Chandler-Gilbert Ally Week

October 11th, 2008

If you’re in the neighborhood, drop by the Chandler-Gilbert Pecos Campus and support our friends as they celebrate Ally Week with the following events:

Oct. 13, 4:00 - 6:00 pm in C110
“The Celluloid Closet” A film about being LGBTQA in Hollywood and film and associate stereotypes. We will hold a discussion panel afterwards to review the film, the meaning of an Ally and it’s importance.

Oct. 14, 4:00 - 5:30 pm in C110
We will host “A coming out panel” featuring speakers from around the community to discuss their coming out experiences. This will be in a Q n A format to give students the chance to relate their own experiences or ask questions of the guest speakers. The summation of this event will be to review the meaning of an Ally and it’s importance.

Oct. 15, 2:00 - 6:00 pm, SC-103
The Clothes line project will be on display. Begun in 1990, the Clothesline Project is a national participatory and visual event where people come together in community to design an anti-violence message on a t-shirt. These t-shirts are hung in a powerful display for all to see. You might be speaking on behalf of yourself, a friend, family member, or the community at large. Students, teachers, staff, and administrators are invited to stop by and design a shirt. T-shirts and art supplies are provided. The shirts will be displayed on a clothesline on October 16 & 17 outside the library.

Oct. 16, 4:00 - 6:00 pm in C110
“But I’m a Cheerleader” is whimsical stab at what LGBTQA youth can go through: the plot is when a naive teenager is sent to rehab camp after her straight-laced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian. We will hold a discussion panel afterwards to review the film, the meaning of an Ally and it’s importance.
