Setting the Record Straight

To the LGBTQ community and ASU students:

The LGBTQ Coalition has recently been made aware that ASASUW Presidential candidate, Twyla Haggerty, has been accused of being homophobic, as well as a plethora of other allegations. Homophobia is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly. Heterosexist ideologies affect thousands of ASU students, and any candidate who subscribes to such an ideology has no place in our student government.

That being said, I would like to make it clear that the allegations against Ms Haggerty are entirely unfounded.

Co-Director Office Hours

Hello everyone!

I apologize on behalf of the coalition for neglecting to update the website more often, and I apologize to all our membership for not posting my personal office hours sooner. I will be available to any and all on Tuesdays from 1:30pm-4:00pm, and Thursdays from 1:30pm-5:45pm.

New Proposed Constitutional Amendments

Last week there were a few proposals to either add or alter parts to the Coalition's Constitution. Here is the text of the proposed amendments, along with the original text of the Constitution. The entire Constitution can be found under "Constitution Revisions, Pt 2" in past blog entries.

Regarding the "T" in "LGBTQ"

Terminology within the Queer community is always a hot topic. I kind of like it. I recently attended a GLSEN training, where we spent much longer than our allotted time as a group trying to come up with definitions for the words "Gay," "Lesbian," "Bisexual," etc.

Gender, sexual identity, being invisiblized, etc. are issues that are so individualized that it is understandably difficult to come to a consensus on which words are best to describe any given person or situation.

Whether I'm tabling for the LGBTQ Coalition, or simply discussing gender with a friend, the question invariably comes up: "What does the 'T' in 'LGBTQ' stand for?"

Attn: Queers - Meet Me On the Mall!

I want as many of you as possible to join me this October in Washington, D.C. for the National Equality March.

One way or another, I am attending this march. I’m planning on flying out from Phoenix on Friday, October 9, staying in a cheap-ass hotel (wanna split the cost?), and coming back sometime in the evening on Sunday, October 11. I need you all to come with me! This is going to be a historical event that we don’t want to miss.

What is it?

Strauss v Horton: CA Supreme Court Upholds Prop 8

The CA Supreme Court upheld Prop 8 this morning.

Petitioners' argued that Prop 8 constituted a revision to the state constitution, rather than a mere amendment. A ballot initiative like Prop 8 would not be sufficient to revise the state constitution.

The CA Supreme Court justices rejected that argument, holding that the only right granted to same-sex couples (by earlier court decisions and by CA's Domestic Partner Act)--and taken away by Prop 8--was the official designation of the term "marriage".

Constitution Revisions, pt 2

The LGBTQ Coalition will vote on April 16th on constitutional revisions. The revised section, III. Elections, 1.2, has been edited to read:

1.2 Elections will be held each semester at the fourth to last regular meeting.

Previously the section read:

1.2 Elections will be held each semester at the second to last regular meeting.

The full text of the our constitution with the changes highlighted in green is available below.

Constitution and Votes!

Changes to the old text of the constitution are in green (with even newer changes in orange!)

Also attached is a summary of the changes made.

LGBTQ Coalition members will vote March 19 on the constitutional amendments and for new Co-Director (nominations are now open!)!

Center Proposal

In the making for over a year, a document has finally been completed for the proposal of a new on-campus LGBTQ Center. All of the details are outlined in the attached file, but following is an excerpt, outlining the mission of the proposal.
